Cosette Adrie Aranther was born as the eldest daughter of House Aranther, one of the oldest noble families in the realm. From childhood, she was taught that a noble's worth was measured not by comfort, but by sacrifice. Every lesson, every dance, every sword drill and diplomatic gathering served one purpose: bring honor to the family and strengthen its future. She grew up surrounded by wealth, etiquette, and expectation. Servants prepared her meals, tutors arranged her days, and every decision she made was quietly shaped by the knowledge that one day she would represent House Aranther before the realm. Her mother often reminded her that nobility was not merely a privilege, but a responsibility. Cosette believed that completely. What she did not understand was how little she actually knew of the lives of those outside her world. She knew the names of stable hands and servants. She spoke kindly to hunters returning from the forests and listened when farmers came to the estate with petitions. She never thought herself better than them. But she still returned afterward to a warm room, fine food, and a household where money was something discussed in ledgers rather than worried over at night. Cosette believed she understood ordinary people. Years later, she would discover how wrong she had been. During one of her childhood wanderings, Cosette became lost in the surrounding woods. She was found by Sister Elowen, a humble priestess of Mielikki, the Lady of Forests. Rather than scolding the frightened girl, Elowen offered her shelter for the night and taught her a lesson Cosette never forgot. "The forest does not care whether your hands wear silk or leather. Before the trees, every soul has equal worth." From that day on, Cosette returned to the woodland shrine whenever the burdens of court became too heavy. It was there that her faith in Mielikki became deeply personal. Elowen taught her that compassion was not pity, that power carried responsibility, and that protecting another life mattered more than the status attached to it. Cosette embraced those teachings wholeheartedly. Perhaps too easily. It was one thing to believe that every life held equal worth beneath the trees. It was another to understand how differently those lives were lived. When she turned sixteen, her parents announced her betrothal to Lord Lucien Valenor, heir to House Valenor. The marriage promised to unite two powerful houses and end generations of political tension. Cosette accepted the engagement as part of her duty. She had been raised knowing that marriage might one day become another way to strengthen House Aranther. If a worthy alliance could protect her family and secure its future, she intended to fulfill that responsibility. Lucien, however, surprised her. He was kind, intelligent, and far less interested in courtly games than she expected. Where Cosette had been trained to navigate politics gracefully, Lucien often seemed amused by them. What began as obligation slowly became trust. Then affection. Eventually, Cosette stopped thinking of the marriage as something she merely owed her family. She began looking forward to it. Among House Valenor, there was one person who welcomed Cosette with unusual warmth: Lady Seraphine Valenor, Lucien's aunt. She treated Cosette as though she were already family, guiding her through Valenor customs and often assuring her that she would make a remarkable lady of the house. Cosette came to trust her as both mentor and friend. For years, she and Lucien prepared for their future together. Then, six months before the wedding, Lucien vanished. His escort was found slaughtered in the northern mountains. His horse returned riderless. No body was ever recovered. Most believed him dead. Cosette never did. Lady Seraphine urged her to accept his loss. "The dead deserve peace,"* she told her. *"The living must carry on." Cosette wanted to believe her. She couldn't. Unable to accept Lucien's disappearance, she began searching herself. What she found was far worse than grief. Hidden beneath the Aranther estate lay a forgotten chamber sealed for generations. Inside she discovered journals written by her ancestors, revealing the foundation of House Aranther's wealth. Centuries ago, the family had secretly sworn itself to an ancient imprisoned being known only as the Hollow King. In exchange for prosperity, influence, and victories in war, each generation offered something in return. Not gold. Not land. People. Every few decades, those who inconveniently disappeared, political rivals, criminals... and sometimes even members of allied houses, had been sacrificed beneath the estate. Cosette read the journals again and again. At first, she refused to believe them. House Aranther had always taught her that sacrifice meant duty. Endurance. Responsibility. Giving something of yourself so that others might prosper. She had never imagined that, somewhere in her family's history, the word had taken on a far darker meaning. Lucien had uncovered the truth shortly before his disappearance. He hadn't abandoned her. Someone had made certain he never reached the wedding. As Cosette searched the hidden chamber, she found fragments of burned correspondence. Among the surviving pages was a letter bearing Lady Seraphine Valenor's seal. It revealed that Seraphine and Lord Alistair Aranther, Cosette's uncle, had exchanged letters in the months leading up to Lucien's disappearance. Whether Seraphine betrayed Lucien, sought to protect him, or simply knew more than she ever admitted, Cosette still cannot tell. The uncertainty haunts her as much as the mystery itself. Cosette stole the journals before they could be destroyed. Only a handful of people know they exist. Her uncle, Lord Alistair Aranther, has hunted her ever since, desperate to recover the evidence before the family's secret destroys centuries of influence. For the first time in her life, Cosette could no longer safely be Lady Cosette Adrie Aranther. Her name, once a source of pride, became dangerous. So she learned to offer only part of it. "Cosette." Nothing more. Broken and uncertain, Cosette returned to Sister Elowen, questioning not only her family but even her faith. Elowen did not urge revenge. Instead she told her, "Truth without wisdom destroys as surely as lies. When you act, child... be certain you save more than you condemn." Those words became Cosette's compass. Yet Cosette cannot simply expose everything. Doing so would condemn innocent relatives, shatter countless alliances, plunge the kingdom into political chaos, and stain the name of every Aranther—even those who knew nothing. And despite everything she discovered, part of her still loves her family. Part of her still wants to make them proud. Part of her still believes House Aranther can become something worthy of the loyalty she was taught to give it. So Cosette left. Publicly, she travels as a ranger and follower of Mielikki, visiting shrines, taking work where she finds it, and learning more of the realm. Privately, she continues searching for anything connected to Lucien, the Hollow King, or the old Aranther pact. She also want to see the realm beyond courtrooms, estates, reports, and family histories. The people beneath the titles. The lives behind the numbers. She was raised believing that one day she might be responsible for them. Before deciding what kind of future House Aranther deserves, Cosette intends to learn what that responsibility actually means. She still believes her family's honor is worth protecting. But she has begun to wonder whether true honor lies in preserving a name... or becoming worthy of it.

Notes (free-text)
Lucien Valenor — Missing fiancé. She loved him genuinely despite their engagement beginning as a political arrangement. She refuses to call him dead because no body was ever found. She still carries his engagement ring but rarely speaks about him.
Sister Elowen — Mentor / spiritual anchor. One of the few people Cosette trusts without reservation. Elowen knew her as Cosette rather than simply an Aranther heir and shaped much of her relationship with Mielikki.
Cedric & Evelyne Aranther — Parents. She loves them, but her discovery has made that love uncomfortable. She doesn't know how much they knew about the family's history—and part of her is afraid to find out.
Lord Alistair Aranther — Uncle / threat. Someone she once regarded as family and now actively avoids. His pursuit of the stolen journals makes him one of the few people Cosette genuinely fears.
Lady Seraphine Valenor — Former mentor / unresolved betrayal. Cosette once trusted her deeply. Now she doesn't know whether Seraphine betrayed Lucien, tried to protect him, or was involved in something else entirely. That uncertainty may hurt more than simple hatred would.
Thorn — Animal companion/friend. Animals are easier for Cosette than people sometimes. They don't care about surnames, inheritance, scandals, or political alliances.
